You've just purchased StudyCards™ but the application doesn't start or is constantly crashing on your iPhone/iPod touch. This appears to be a common bug in the iPhone OS. Restart your iPhone twice by switching it completely off and on again (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then drag the slider...)
If it still doesn't work and you haven't entered any personal cards yet, try re-installing StudyCards™
Users of many other iPhone applications have reported data loss problems after installing updates, and sadly, StudyCards™ is no exception. This is not a fault on our side, but rather a strange bug in iTunes/iPhone OS. From our customer support issue logs, we have seen just three users who have lost date during the update. As far as we know, no one has yet been able to reliably reproduce this bug, so we don’t know how long it will take Apple to fix it.
There is a procedure you can follow to prevent data losses until Apple has resolved the issue. Note that this procedure works equally well for all iPhone applications, not just StudyCards™.
StudyCards™ is actually working very hard and only appears to be frozen. Large decks can take a while to process. While downloading is occurring StudyCards™ is actually creating the necessary internal structures. During this process we prevent any user activity until the deck is safely stored on the device.
There is a progress indicator (spinning wheel) that should advise that the download is still running. A slow network or device may require additional time to download completely. It may appear to 'freeze' but it's really working very hard. For some unknown reason the progress indicator does not always appear. Please be patient. The largest deck we have can take a few minutes.
If the decks are still showing up on the main ("Decks") page, it is just a display issue. Here's the FIX:
Please close StudyCards and do the following:
You should see the background appear with your text in front as before. You can change back to your old background image.
Something happened to the user settings during the update. It's not happening 95+% of the time and we don't know why it happens when it does. I've seen the same device update fine the first time and have this issue the second time.
You can work Off-Line! For iPod touch users - this is very important. Use it on the plane, or at the beach. Anywhere you don't have an internet connection you can use StudyCards™.
Yes you can. There are now two ways you can do this. Go to the Card Creation launch page. Be sure you download any cards you create right away. We delete cards at will and without warning.
StudyCards™ followed Apple's recommendation to put user settings in the shared area at the iPhone/iPod touch's main screen. Go to the main screen (where Mail, Photos, Videos, Safari icons are).

Tap on the Settings Icon, scroll down to where the third party apps are stored, tap on StudyCards.
We're moving some settings into the application in future releases.
You need StudyCards™ on your device to see cards. Once you have the application open you can tap on the + key located at the top of the screen to Add a new deck.
On the Deck Details page you can tap on the Downloads button at the top.

[Be sure you have a WiFi internet connection open for this and your connection to your WiFi has established itself].
Once the connection is made a list of Categories will appear. You can browse through these categories for decks you might be interested in. You can also open Staging and see what other users have created during the past couple of days or so. I've seen as many as 300+ decks in the Staging category at one time.
See if you can EXPORT the cards from that application to a tab delimited or comma delimited file. If you can do that you're well on your way. Go to the Card Creation launch page for more information on this.
The character string is [<<], in 1.11 you can also use [n].
XXXXX[<<]XXXXX
Here's a trick I use: Create your list of words or phrases you want to have separated:
AAAAAA
BBBBB
CCCCCCC
Then copy the [<<] with spaces on either side and paste it in place.
AAAAAA [<<]
BBBBB [<<]
CCCCCCC [<<]
(Be sure you copy the space on either side though.)
Tap on your new deck and see if your cards look okay. If not, then it's possible that you missed something with the formatting. Long words with no space breaks will not appear. (This is fixed in the next release) so if you don't see your cards, don't get frustrated. Take a look at your text file and be sure you have all the formatting and spacing required. You can even reuse the same name since it will write over anything you did before.
Another cause is that some word processors use unexpected characters which can corrupt the file and not allow it to load into the application. For example some special quote symbols and the long dashes have been known to cause problems.
There is a way to merge a deck, but it is currently done outside the application. You can combine two text files used to create two separate decks and Copy&Paste them into one new deck.
You can Add cards the same way - by simply updating the original text file used to batch load your decks onto the device and creating a new larger deck.
Two ways-
StudyCards™ does not require you to enter an answer. Look at the Question and think of the answer, you can double-tap or in version 1.9 swipe or flick down to see if you got it right. If you did, then tap on the "Correct" button and the next card will slide into focus. It's the honor system, so you'll get the most out of the application if you score yourself correctly.
First I want to say I am sorry to hear this happened. I don't like this when it happens to me and I certainly don't like it when it happens to you. To date I have seen this twice with StudyCards. Once about in Mid July and the second toward the end of July. There are a few possible causes that I am aware of:
1. There are user configurable settings which the program expects that are not set. I have not seen this on StudyCards yet, but it is one possibility I like to rule out since it's very simple. Try This: Go to the Settings Area, open StudyCards settings and change your background, or your font size, style to a setting that you would prefer. Try reopening the application to see if this fixes the problem. Let me know if this fixes the problem. If it does there may be something I can do about it on my end.
2. Your device may need to take a quick nap. Try This: Shut Down the device and Restart it. Please follow Apple's instructions for their device shutdown and startup procedures.
3. There may a problem related to application or device "authorization". Please advise Apple of this issue. Describe the situation to them. Seek and follow Apple's guidance on this.
For the curious and daring among you:
It is entirely possible and in a few cases proven that just removing the application from your device and reloading it will fix the problem. If not, it may requires an additional step of reauthorizing the PC or Mac through the iTunes - Store menu just prior to reinstalling the application.
Please note, you absolutely should be sure to follow any advice Apple has regarding steps involving authorizing, deinstalling, installing applications through their tools and on their devices. I only mention these steps as they were described to me by a user who said they followed these steps and it worked. I do not speak for Apple and do not recommend you try these steps unless you are very comfortable and willing to take the risks involved.
Lastly, I can assure you that the application has been thoroughly tested by WorkLifeStudy.com and reviewed by Apple prior to release. Please be sure to let me know of any problems and/or solutions you find regarding any issues you discover. It is my goal to have a reliable and useful application on the iPhone and iPod touch. I would like to post any information here to help others have a great experience.
The backup and restore mechanism is created by Apple and works the same for all iPhone applications. iTunes backs up your data automatically every time you connect your iPhone to your computer. Please note that iTunes will not back up an iPhone that is not configured to sync with that computer.
However there is one problem: If you lose your data (e.g. by removing an application from your iPhone) and connect your iPhone again to your computer, iTunes automatically overwrites the existing backup with a new one. Since you just lost your data on the device, this will effectively delete your previous backup from iTunes! To prevent this, you need to do the following:
If you lost data anyway, you may still be able to retrieve your cards again.
Ultimately, as much as we try to ensure against data loss- WorkLifeStudy is not responsible for any content. There is just no way we can possibly protect every document you create anymore than Microsoft can protect every Excel spreadsheet you create.
Please let me know if you do loose anything related to the update and it is no longer in the Staging category and I will try to recover for you. Just email me.
